How we look after your information at Your Quiet Corner.
Your Quiet Corner is a warm AI companion app for adults who want someone to talk to. It is not a therapy service, not a medical service, and not a substitute for professional or emergency help. The service is provided by Taufiq Rahman, a sole trader based in Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom, trading as "Your Quiet Corner". For the purposes of UK data protection law, Taufiq Rahman is the data controller for your information. We are registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), reference ZC203820. To contact us about privacy: privacy@yourquietcorner.co.uk
We only collect what we need to run the app: your name or nickname; your email address (to create and secure your account and send sign-in codes); your messages and conversations; mood check-ins (the mood you select and any note you add); optional details you share at sign-up such as your occupation and a bit of life context; your date of birth (used only to check you are 18 or over); approximate location (if you give a UK postcode or city we convert it to approximate coordinates so the companion can do things like give you local weather — we do not store the postcode itself); reminders and events you ask the companion to remember; and basic safety signals (if the app's safety features detect you may be in distress, we record that an event occurred and its risk level so the app can respond and show you real support). If you turn on notifications, we also store a device token for your phone so notifications can be delivered to it, and a record of each check-in the companion decides to send you, including the message and the reason it was sent. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. The app is for adults only.
We process your information to provide the companion service and hold a conversation with you; remember things across conversations so it feels continuous; keep your account secure and send sign-in codes; show you relevant real-world support resources, especially if you seem to be struggling; and keep the service working, safe and reliable.
Our legal basis under UK GDPR is: Contract (we need to process your account and messages to provide the service you signed up for); Consent (for optional information you choose to share, which you can withdraw at any time); and Explicit consent under Article 9(2)(a) for your mood and wellbeing information, which is special category health data — see the next section.
Because the app lets you record how you're feeling, we collect and process information about your mood and emotional wellbeing: the mood you select at check-in, any note you add, and the things you choose to talk about with the companion, which may reveal how you are feeling mentally or emotionally ("Health and Wellbeing Data"). Under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 this is special category health data, which receives extra legal protection, and we treat it with extra care.
Our lawful basis: Article 6 — performance of a contract, and your consent. Article 9(2)(a) condition — explicit consent: we only collect, store or use your Health and Wellbeing Data because you explicitly agree to it when you sign up.
How we use it: to let the companion remember how you've been feeling so it can respond in a way that reflects your history rather than starting from scratch each time; and to recognise when you may be struggling so the app can gently point you towards real-world support.
We do not produce mood charts, graphs, trend dashboards or exportable reports — your mood information is used solely so the companion can hold a more understanding conversation with you. We never sell your Health and Wellbeing Data, never use it for advertising or cross-site tracking, and never use your conversations to train AI models.
Withdrawing your consent: your consent is voluntary and you stay in control. You can withdraw it at any time by deleting your account and data using the "delete everything" option in the app, which permanently removes your messages, mood records, reminders, safety events, profile and login. If you'd prefer another way to withdraw consent, email privacy@yourquietcorner.co.uk.
To make the companion feel personal and continuous, we build up a "memory" of you over time — a summary of what you've shared and how you've been feeling — so the companion can respond in a way that reflects your history. This is a form of profiling, used only to provide the companion experience.
We also use this memory, together with your recent messages, the events you've asked the companion to remember, and the times of day you normally use the app, to decide automatically whether to send you a check-in message and what it should say. This decision is made by software without a person reviewing it first — see "Check-ins from the companion" below.
We do not use this to make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you. A check-in is a short, optional message you are free to ignore, and it has no bearing on your access to the service or on anything else about you.
If you turn on notifications, the companion can message you first, rather than only replying when you write to it. The idea is simple: a friend gets in touch sometimes, instead of waiting to be contacted.
To decide whether to get in touch, and what to say, the app looks at what it remembers about you, your recent conversation, any events you asked it to remember, and the times of day you usually use the app. This happens automatically, without a person reading your messages. The companion aims to reach you at a time that suits your own routine, and sends at most two check-ins in any 24 hours. If you don't reply to two in a row, it eases off on its own.
Our legal basis for this is your consent. You can turn check-ins off at any time in Settings, under "Let Someone check in on me". Turning them off stops them immediately and changes nothing else — the companion will still be there whenever you write to it. You can also turn off notifications entirely, which stops check-ins too.
Please be aware that a notification may appear on your phone's screen even while it is locked, so anyone nearby could see it. We keep check-in notifications brief and general, and they are never labelled in a way that reveals what you have talked about. Even so, if you share a device or a home and would rather nobody else saw them, it's worth turning off notification previews in your phone's own settings, or turning check-ins off here.
We keep a record of each check-in — whether one was sent, the message, and the reason — so we can make sure the companion is getting this right. These records are deleted along with everything else if you delete your account.
Check-ins are never used to draw you back to the app or to make you feel you owe us a reply. The companion will not comment on how long you've been away, and it is not a monitoring service — nobody is watching over you. If something serious is going on, please use the real support listed in the app.
You can tap the speaker icon on any of Someone's messages to hear it read aloud. This is entirely optional — if you never tap it, nothing described in this section happens.
What gets sent. When you tap to listen, the text of that one message is sent to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, which turns it into audio and sends it back. Because Someone's replies are about you, that text can include personal details you've shared — your work, the people in your life, how you've been feeling.
What doesn't get sent. Your own messages are never sent for speech synthesis. Neither is your name, your email, your location, or anything else from your account.
Where it's processed. Google processes this on its global infrastructure, which means the text may be handled outside the UK. This transfer is covered by Google's Data Processing Addendum, which includes the UK International Data Transfer Addendum approved by the Information Commissioner's Office. We have carried out a transfer risk assessment.
What Google keeps. Nothing. The audio is generated, sent back to your device, and discarded. Google does not store the text or the audio, and does not use either to train its models. We don't store the audio either.
Messages we will never read aloud. If a message contains crisis support information — helpline numbers, emergency numbers — the speaker icon will not work on it. Those messages are meant to be read, and having them spoken by a synthetic voice would not be right.
Choosing a voice. You pick from three voices the first time you use this, and can change it any time in Settings. Your choice is stored with your account. There is also an option to have replies play automatically as they arrive; this is off unless you turn it on. If you turn it on, be aware that Someone's replies will play out loud through your device speaker, which other people nearby may hear.
Turning it off. There is no separate off switch, because nothing happens unless you tap the speaker. If you have turned on automatic playback, turn it off in Settings.
Your account and stored data are held within the European Union (Ireland). To generate the companion's replies, your conversations are processed in the United States by OpenRouter, Inc. and the model providers we allow it to use (Together AI, Baseten, DeepInfra and Groq — all US-hosted). This is a transfer of your personal data outside the UK. These transfers are protected by the ICO-approved Standard Contractual Clauses (UK Addendum). We also enforce Zero Data Retention on these connections, so neither OpenRouter nor the model provider retains, logs, or trains on your conversations or health and wellbeing information.
Separately, if you choose to hear a reply read aloud, the text of that one message is sent to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, which is processed on Google's global infrastructure and may therefore be handled outside the UK. This is covered by Google's Data Processing Addendum, incorporating the ICO-approved UK International Data Transfer Addendum. Google does not store the text or the audio and does not use either to train its models. See "Hearing Someone's replies out loud" above.
We keep your information for as long as your account is active, so the companion can remember you. You can delete everything at any time — when you do, we permanently remove your messages, reminders, safety events, profile and login. We also delete data automatically if an account becomes inactive: if you don't sign in for 18 months we'll email you a warning, and if you still don't return within 30 days of that email we'll permanently delete your account and all associated data.
You are in control of your data.
Under UK data protection law you also have the right to access your data, correct it, have it erased, restrict or object to processing, and to data portability. To exercise any of these, email privacy@yourquietcorner.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the ICO ( ico.org.uk).
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, including access controls so your data is only accessible to your own account, encrypted storage, and secure sign-in. No system is ever 100% secure, but we work to keep your information safe.
Your Quiet Corner is a companion, not a crisis line, therapist, or emergency service. If you are in crisis or at risk, please contact the Samaritans on 116 123, or call 999 in an emergency. The app will always show you real support resources for free.
If we change how we handle your data, we'll update this policy and change the "last updated" date above. If the changes are significant, we'll do our best to let you know in the app.
